Venice 6114 is a former auto repair shop that has just been turned into an office and exhibition space overseen by artist Sergio Bromberg, who curates shows and encourages proposals. Located at 6114 Venice Blvd, the space is just around the corner from the La Cienega Blvd gallery strip, home to high-profile Los Angeles art spaces (both non-profit and galleries) like LA><ART, Blum & Poe, and Angles Gallery.
EVERY PERSON HAS TO BE IN LINE WITH THEIR MATERIALS SEPARATE. CADA PERSONA TIENE QUE IR EN LA LINEA CON SUS MATERIALES SEPARADOS was the forth project at Venice 6114. Since beginning in the summer of 2010, Sergio Bromberg has produced a website and logotype for the space, along with outlining a general exhibition program (in which he more often than not also participates as an artist, though not in the third show).
The organizational identity of Venice 6114 was, at the time of EVERY PERSON, still in a process of becoming established, with some graphic design basics determined and other, more elemental questions as yet unanswered - What was the intention of this space, both as an independent effort and as a project located in an art discourse amongst dozens of art galleries? Why would an individual cultural producer operate under an entity, to still mainly work alone? Is Venice 6114 going to become a gallery, or some other small business-like endeavor?
Meanwhile, one recent consistency to the opening parties at Venice 6114 had been having DJs perform. While not explicitly programmatic in the way of, for example, the consistent look of the exhibition invitations, hearing a DJ perform in the background had nonetheless become, at least for that time, a characteristic of the site and situation.
The opening event for EVERY PERSON was held on Saturday, January 8, 2011. After that, Venice 6114 was open by occasional appointment only for the duration of the exhibition.
Bao-An Nguyen, professionally known as DJ Baohaus, performs at clubs and bars of all sizes. She was asked to perform at the opening, from 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.
As a collaboration, DJ Baohaus agreed that she would perform a mix of her own construction and style, and would be paid her regular rate. However, that mix would contain, amongst whatever other genres of music and types of sound she chose to incorporate, samples of her own choosing from any or all of the following audiobooks: Small Business for Dummies: 2nd Edition by Eric Tyson and Jim Schell (2006), How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie (1937, 2009), Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill (1937, 2004), 7 Steps to Fearless Speaking by Lilyan Wilder (1999), and Eight Ways to Build Collaborative Teams by Lynda Gratton and Tamara J. Erickson for the Harvard Business Review (November 2007).
